The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program offers free health exams and education to adults and children with intellectual disabilities.
Healthy Athletes takes place in conjunction with competition events and will be offered at the Invitational Games 2020.
Health screenings will be provided in the following seven areas:
• Fit Feet
• Health Promotion
• Healthy Hearing
• Opening Eyes
• Special Smiles
• Strong Minds
Healthy Athletes is not only a program for athletes but, through training and hands-on experience at screenings, it is a program for health care students and professionals to increase knowledge of best practices in caring for people with intellectual disabilities.
Since the program was launched in 1997, over 2,1 million screenings have been offered to Special Olympics athletes worldwide and more than 240 000 health care professionals have been trained.
The campus of Mid Sweden University will be the location for Healthy Athletes and the European Youth Leadership Summit during the Invitational Games. It is located in central Östersund.
Mid Sweden University has 13 000 students, of which 2800 study in Östersund. It is the only sports university in Sweden with a focus on sports for people with disabilities.
